Second Deputy Commandant of the Hellenic Coast Guard Vice Admiral HCG Tryfon Kontizas
The 2nd Commandant of the Hellenic Coast Guard (H.C.G), Vice Admiral Tryfon Kontizas, was born in Syros in 1970. He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Syros for Marine Deck Officers. In 1995, he joined the Hellenic Coast Guard, and by 1997, he was commissioned as an Ensign. Subsequently, he graduated from the Hellenic Naval War College in 2007.
He has served in both combat and administrative agencies within the Coast Guard throughout his career. Specifically, he served as a Commander on the Coast Guard Patrol Boat (P.P.L.S.) 030 and as a Department Head in various Directorates, such as the Operational Means and Special Units Directorate, the Security Directorate, the State Security Directorate, the Sea Borders Protection Directorate. Additionally, he actively engagedin the Olympic Coast Guard Security Centercontributing from the early phase of preparation to the successful completion of the security plans for the Olympic Gamesat the command and operational levelsIn addition, he served asa Senior National Expert at the European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC) of Europol (2015-2018).
He served as the Harbour Master at the Central Port Authority of Lavriofrom 2019 to 2020 and subsequently as the Director of the Security and Sea Borders Protection Directorate. In November 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Commodore H.C.G., and in April 2022, he was appointed as the Director of the Security & Policing Branch. In March 2023, he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral H.C.G. By decision of the Supreme Board for the Hellenic Coast Guard Personnel Selection on March13, 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral H.C.G. and was elected to fill the vacancy of the Second Deputy Commandant of H.C.G.
He has attended a series of retraining programs and seminars in Greece and abroad on subjects related to national security and information in the Mediterranean region, counter-terrorism, operation planning, information management and analysis, and protection of sensitive targets. He has been awarded all the decorations, medals, and commendations provided for his rank and position.
He has an excellent command of the English language.
